Event Description:
The Rocky Mountain Printmaking Alliance will hold its 4th Biennial Symposium at Washington State University and the University of Idaho April 19-21. The symposium will be centered around the theme of COMMUNITY/CRAFT/CONCEPT to celebrate prints and printmaking and to connect artists, educators, and students throughout the region.

RMPA2018 will draw approximately 100 professional artists, educators and students from the Rocky Mountain region. This 3 day event will feature keynote speakers, printmaking demonstrations, panel discussions, print portfolio exchanges, exhibitions, and an open portfolio event that is open to the public. The founders of Terrain Spokane, Ginger Ewing and Luke Baumgarten will be the opening night speakers, who have helped build a stronger arts community in Spokane and beyond. Judith Baumann, Master Printer at Crow’s Shadow Institute of Art in Pendleton, OR, will speak at U of I, and Lari Gibbons, Professor, The University of North Texas & Director of P.R.I.N.T Press, will work on a print project at WSU and will speak on the closing night of the event. Spokane artist, Reinaldo Gil Zambrano, a recipient of the 2018 Spokane Arts Grants Award, will install print murals with students from Eastern Washington University on the WSU and U of I campuses.

On Saturday, April 21st, the public is welcome to attend the Open Portfolio event, where many conference attendees will present their artwork in the atrium of the Fine Arts Building at WSU from 2-5 PM. About RMPA: The Rocky Mountain Printmaking Alliance was established to foster education, promote communication and create community between academic professionals, independent presses and individual artists within the region. Through outreach and education, the Alliance serves to strengthen connections, encourage discussion and advance regional awareness surrounding the varied art and artists of printmaking. RMPA is a 501(c) nonprofit organization.

What is Printmaking?: Printmaking is a vital component of the visual arts that uses traditional, contemporary, and digital printing processes as the primary means for creating works of art. This includes some of the earliest forms of printing, such as woodblock printing, to etching and screen printing, to using CNC routers or laser engravers to create printing plates. Artists working with printmaking maintain a lively community of exchange and research, with conferences being held throughout the world on a regular basis. These meetings – such as RMPA2018 – have become an important educational component for students interested in, and studying printmaking, who wish to engage with professionals in the field. Printmaking studios are a nexus of art, design, community, exchange, and commerce. Fine art prints are often produced at specialized printmaking publishing studios where artists will work with skilled printers to create limited editions of original works of art. In colleges, universities, and art schools everywhere, students and professional artists can work side by side to learn about the different print processes and create their own prints. Community or co-operative printmaking studios are where many independent artists will often work. At all of these studios, the prints produced by artists are not reproductions in any way. Each print is created by hand, from plates created directly by the artist, to produce original works of art in limited editions.
