About the Artist:

Ames was a second-generation Vandal. He first enrolled at U of I in the mid-1950s. He moved to California and served several years of alternative services as a conscientious objector during the Korean War. Ames and his wife, Lela, returned to Moscow in 1959 with their young daughter and he re-enrolled at U of I as a part-time student. In 1961, he began working part-time at the U of I News Bureau. He earned his bachelor's degree in journalism with a minor in art from U of I in 1965. In 1965, Ames became a full-time employee, eventually becoming head of the U of I Publications and News Bureau, and then creative director. Ames retired in 1995, after more than 34 years with U of I. He was a strong supporter of the College of Art and Architecture.

His contributions to U of I's legacy include hiring the designer who created the original U of I daisy logo and designing U of I's alumni magazine. He also designed the award-winning Vandal logo used by U of I Athletics for nearly 20 years, as well as the U of I centennial logo and all centennial print collateral and souvenirs.

Ames died in 2004, leaving a collection of more than 150 plein air oil and watercolor paintings, many sketchbooks, drawings and hundreds of photos.
