Event Description:
Please join us at BookPeople of Moscow for a reading, signing, and discussion with author Amy Shively Hawk. Shively Hawk's new book, "Six Years in the Hanoi Hilton: An Extraordinary Story of Courage and Survival in Vietnam", is a riveting portrayal of life as an American prisoner of war trapped on the other side of the world. "Six Years in the Hanoi Hilton" is the story of her father, Captain James Shively, a Vietnam POW who survived six years in captivity, with a foreword by prison mate Senator John McCain. After being shot down over North Vietnam, U.S. Air Force fighter pilot Captain Shively endured brutal treatment at the hands of the enemy in Hanoi prison camps. Captain Shively is the epitome of an American hero: despite unimaginable horrors in prison, the contemplation of suicide, and his beloved girlfriend moving on back home, he somehow found hope escaping prison and eventually reuniting with his long-lost love — proving, in his words, that “Life is only what you make of it.” Shively Hawk is the sister of local Moscow businesswoman Nikki Woodland and the stepdaughter of James Shively, who married her mother after his release from a Hanoi prison when she was 5 years old. Her background is in journalism, speaking, and advertising/marketing. She has a BA in communication studies from Eastern Washington University, and a minor in broadcast journalism. Shively Hawk and her husband, Steve, have a teenage daughter and son, and live in Hood River, Oregon. For more information, visit Shively Hawk's website: www.amyhawk.com
