Name: Backyard Harvest Celebrates 10 Years!
Date: June 9, 2018
Time: 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM PDT
Event Description:
Backyard Harvest (BYH) invites our Quad-Cities
community to celebrate 10 years of increasing access to fresh food on the Palouse and in the Lewis-Clark Valley with a birthday party at Palouse Clearwater Environmental Institute (PCEI). This family friendly,
free event features fun twists on traditional birthday games, cake, music, raffles, and a no-host beer, wine, & cider bar from Moscow Brewing Company. Attendees are invited to bring a favorite dish to share potluck style.
A seed was planted, and the idea of Backyard Harvest began to sprout in 2006 when one gardener, Amy, grew more lettuce than her family could eat and didn't want it to go to waste so she sought to donate it to those who could use it. The next year, that sprout grew bigger and stronger with the guidance of PCEI and increasing community support. On June 11, 2008 we
blossomed and the 501c(3) Backyard Harvest was born.
Ten years later, at least 25,000 people in the Quad-Cities area struggle with food security on a regular basis (United Way ALICE Report -- Pacific Northwest). Backyard Harvest continues to gather fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste and share them across the
region. With support from volunteers, gardeners, homeowners, donors, churches, students and many others we have gathered, gleaned, grown, and delivered over 300,000 pounds of fresh, local food to food pantries, senior meals, youth-based and alternative access sites across our
four-county region.
