Century Farm Tour at Rim Rock Ranch

For more than 100 years the Hermann family has farmed outside of Genesee. Charles Hermann began operations in 1909 on the property that today is known as Rim Rock Ranches. Third and fourth generation Hermanns, Jim and Ben, now work and care for more than 2,700 acres. In 2017 the family’s dedication was recognized with a Century Farm Award, presented by the Idaho State Historical Society. On the afternoon of Saturday, July 20 the public will have a unique opportunity to tour this working Century Farm. Those interested in the event should plan to meet at the Genesee City Park (140 E. Walnut St.) at 1:00pm to carpool to the Hermann farm, located about 15 minutes outside of town. Jim Hermann will lead an on-site tour and share his insights on how farming has changed over the last 100 years, how Rim Rock Ranch is practicing innovative land conservation methods today, and what the future of agriculture may hold. Participants will return to Genesee by 3:30pm for a reception hosted by Pacific NW Coop, with light fare featuring locally produced ingredients. This event is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP to the Latah County Historical Society. The program is offered in conjunction with the forthcoming exhibition of Crossroads: Change in Rural America, a Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition show brought to the state by the Idaho Humanities Council. LCHS is coordinating the exhibit’s six week run in Moscow at the Chamber of Commerce downtown office, beginning on August 23rd.
