The Washington Idaho Symphony welcomes Dr. Edward Dixon as Guest Conductor for the January Concert Series. A frequent performer, he has appeared as cello soloist with the Yakima, Wenatchee, Walla Walla and Mid-Columbia Symphonies among others and has most recently participated in the Siletz Bay and McCall Music Festivals. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1987. Dr. Dixon has been principal cellist of the Walla Walla Symphony since 1991, the Mid-Columbia Symphony since 2010 and the Washington-Idaho Symphony in 2013-14. "I am thrilled to have Dr. Dixon join us for our January concerts. He brings a wealth of experience, a stellar repertoire, and a passion for creating amazing music," said Rudy Greg Trejo, president of the Washington Idaho Symphony Board of Directors.
In addition to his work with the Whitman College Symphony, Dr. Dixon has conducted the Walla Walla, Mid-Columbia, Washington-Idaho and Oregon East Symphonies and was the music director for the Walla Walla Symphony's Mares n Music concerts. Dixon also served seven times as conductor for the Walla Walla Community College summer musical productions staged in the Fort Walla Walla Amphitheater.
"It is an honor for me to have the opportunity to conduct the Washington Idaho Symphony for its January 27 and 28 performances. The program of music is an especially beautiful one feature the romantic music of Edvard Grieg and Jean Sibelius. Both composers musically captured the natural beauty of their native countries of Norway and Finland and the deep passions of retie people. These powerful works speak to audiences everywhere," Dixon said.
Formerly on the music faculties of the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, Central Washington University, and Whitman College, Dr. Dixon now divides his retirement between managing the Walla Walla Symphony and concertizing in the Pacific Northwest.
Dixon received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Southern California and his doctorate from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
The January concert series includes Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite and Piano Concerto in A Minor, 1st Movement. In addition, Sibelius' Symphony No.2 will be performed and the 2016-2017 Young Artists Competition Winner Melody Morrison performs on piano.
