Eighth Blackbird
The three-time Gramming-winnging ensemble eighth blackbird brings its entertaining and provoking music to the stage of the University of Idaho's Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1 The sextet of percussion, piano, flute, clarinet, violin and cello combines the finesse of a string quartet, the energy of a rock band and the audacity of a storefront theater company. The Chicago-based "super-musicians" (LA Times) will also teach classes in Moscow during their residency, sponsored by the Auditorium Chamber Music Series.
Their program "Still in Motion" features new works by the National's Bryce Dessner (the folk-inspired Murder Ballades), Steve Mackey (music from his Grammy-winning Slide) and Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Parry.
Eighth blackbird's name comes from the Wallace Steven's evocative, aphoristic poem, Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird. It holds ongoing Ensemble in Residence positions at the Curtis institute of Music, Universty of Richmond, and the University of Chicago. A decade-long relationship with Chicago's Cedille Records has produced six acclaimed recordings. The ensemble's Grammy Awards are for the recordings strange imaginary animals, Lonely Motel: Music from Slide, and Meanwhile.
The public is welcome to the classes offered by the members of eighth blackbird on Wednesday, April 2 at the University of Idaho. These include a presentation on Stage Movement for Musicians, and individual master classes. The times and locations of these classes are posted on the Auditorium Series website: www.auditoriumseries.org.
