Event Description:
– In conjunction with the exhibition Roger Shimomura: An American Knockoff, the Washington State University Museum of Art announces a documentary screening, reception and panel discussion for the Emmy award-winning film Witness: The Legacy of Heart Mountain on October 15, 2014. A public reception will be held at 6 pm Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the Museum of Art/WSU gallery with the documentary screening of the film at 7 pm in the CUB Auditorium, and a panel discussion with the creators of the documentary to follow. Admission is free.
Witness: The Legacy of Heart Mountain won three Emmy Awards at the 66th Annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards on Saturday, July 26, 2014. David Ono, co-producer, won for Outstanding Writer - Programming and Jeff MacIntyre, co-producer, won for Outstanding Editor - Programming and Outstanding Videographer – for Single Camera Programming. The production also won a Radio Television Digital News Association's Edward R. Murrow Award and their national "Unity" award for diversity programming.
Ono and MacIntyre look forward to screening their award winning documentary with the WSU students and Pullman community. This film tells the story of the Heart Mountain internment camp where over 10,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans were imprisoned behind barbed wire and guard towers for no other reason than their heritage. Japanese American internment is a profound chapter of American history.
Inside the camp, Patti Hirahara’s father and grandfather had a secret dark room under their barracks where they developed film and made photographic prints. In the years they were imprisoned, they took thousands of photos, each an opportunity to see the daily struggles of making camp life bearable. The George and Frank C. Hirahara Photograph Collection is now housed in the Manuscripts, Archives, & Special Collections at the WSU Libraries with the donation by Patti Hirahara to her father's alma mater. Heart Mountain brings these stories to life.The screening will be followed with special guests David Ono and Jeff MacIntyre, Patti Hirahara, Dr. John Streamas and Jeff Snell giving their personal views on this dark time in history in a panel discussion. Since 1996, David Ono has been the co-anchor for ABC7 Eyewitness News in Los Angeles, California. Jeff MacIntyre is TV Producer/ owner of Content Media Group, a Los Angeles-based production company. Together, the two have traveled the world covering important events and telling stories that matter. Collectively, they’ve earned over 25 Emmy Awards.
