Name: Handel's Messiah
Date: April 26, 2014 - April 27, 2014
Event Description:
The New Saint Andrews College Concert Choir, along with professional tenor Ross Hauck, the Collegium Musicum choral group, an orchestra composed of NSA students, local university faculty and student members and community members, will give two performances of Handel’s Messiah, Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26, both at 7 p.m. at the UI Administration Auditorium. Admission to the performances is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.

Conductor David Erb, Senior Fellow of Music and Choral Director at New Saint Andrews since 2008 and conductor of the local choral group, Collegium Musicum, will direct both Messiah performances. Prior to coming to New Saint Andrews, Erb conducted choirs at the Lawrence University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Bucknell University, and numerous churches. He holds a doctorate in choral conducting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Tenor soloist Ross Hauck, of Issaquah, Wash., has been described by the Seattle Times as “almost superhuman in musical effect.” Hauck, a regular soloist with the Seattle Symphony, has sung Handel’s Messiah with Apollo’s Fire (the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra), Portland Baroque Orchestra, Seattle Baroque, Dallas Bach Society, Helena Symphony, Portland Chamber Orchestra, and Orchestra Kentucky. He has also sung with the National Symphony, Chicago Symphony as a member of the Steans Institute, and the Tanglewood symphony.

Handel’s famous oratorio is a collection of Scripture passages which follow the history of redemption in keeping with the major seasons of the Christian church calendar. While the Messiah is primarily performed today during the Christmas season, it was more traditionally performed during the Lenten or Easter seasons during Handel’s own time.
