Andy Sydow is a true treasure of Denver’s rapidly growing music scene. His music dabbles in Americana, swampy Blues slide guitar, Southern Rock, Folk and Singer/Songwriter, all tied together by his heavy New Orleans influence. “I’ve loved music since I was a little kid, but it was seeing those southern New Orleans and Mississippi guys that really changed the game for me. When I saw guys like Henry Butler, Anders Osborne and North Mississippi Allstars, my passion for music was met on an entirely different level.”
Sydow started playing the piano when he was barely old enough to walk and started taking lessons in the fourth grade. He added on saxophone in fifth, and guitar and harmonica a few years later. After graduating high school, Sydow attended the University of Colorado at Denver, majoring in Music Performance with an emphasis in Jazz Piano. He performed in the schools signature traditional jazz ensemble, the Claim Jumpers for three years, and was the band leader for two.
It was during his college years that he began playing around town regularly both as a solo act and with his full band. He gained a following playing at South Moe’s BBQ & Bowl in Englewood. After playing a handful of shows there, he eventually started headlining shows and opening up for national acts. Moe’s, along with the Toad Tavern in Littleton are still Sydow’s favorite places to play in the Denver area.
In 2012 he shared the stage with the likes of Delbert McClinton, Dick Dale and Bob Margolin, the ladder of whom was so impressed by his playing that he invited Sydow to sit in with his band for part of the night. When Margolin returned at the end of the same year, he invited Sydow to play piano with his band all night at Lincoln’s Roadhouse in Denver. Sydow also performed with his band at the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Music Festival, doing opening sets for both Michael Franti & Spearhead, and Kid Rock. He also performed a set in KBCO’s Studio C at the end of the year.
2013 has proved to be an even bigger year for Sydow, as he has gained a regional reputation both as a player and as a songwriter amongst the blues/americana crowd. Some notable sets include opening for Dick Dale, Samantha Fish, Tinsley Ellis, and Johnny Hickman of Cracker. He also had the honor of sharing the stage with the likes of Janiva Magness and John Nemeth at the historic Zoo Bar in Lincoln, NE. He performed constantly through the summer, including making appearances at numerous festivals up to the release of his debut self-tittled album at the end of August.
The end of 2013 and into 2014 will see some bigger performances from Sydow, more tour dates and some new recordings!
