Adapted from the classic American autobiographical work, Black Boy dramatizes Richard Wright’s journey from childhood innocence to adulthood in the Jim Crow South, focusing on Richard’s hunger for knowledge and his fight to claim basic human rights in a racist society.
This Literature to Life original was adapted for the stage in 2005 and premiered at the Kennedy Center. It features 50 minutes of verbatim performance from the first half of the book, with the actor playing upwards of 15 characters from Richard Wright’s past!
Interactive discussions before and after the performance will explore themes of racism, individualism, and nonconformity.
