Lonnie Hutson, 38 Minus: The Idaho Fish Project

Opening Reception: Wednesday, February 19, 5:30-8 p.m.

"For 38 Minus, I documented each of Idaho's native fish species as a handmade paper relief sculpture. The collection represents a healthy river ecosystem. Health, a condition of wellbeing, is grounded in science yet easily understood by the public; just as a fish is something most of us are familiar with, making the subject accessible. Presenting the familiar in a new way, the paper reliefs are stripped to essential form, to reveal the unique beauty of each species. Working with the concept of time, I selected paper as the medium for the exhibit to incorporate materials like seven thousand years old ash from Mount Mazama, nests built by last summer's abundant paper wasps, and plant materials gathered over the past several years from rivers and creeks in Idaho." - Lonnie Hutson.

"38 Minus" is accompanied by a 32-page full-color catalog and is available for tour. The exhibition is sponsored by the University of Idaho 125th anniversary. Additional sponsors: Western Division and Idaho Chapter of the American Fisheries Society, Idaho Department of Fish and Game and the Nez Perce Tribe. The reception is co-hosted by the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival "Community Kickoff," a Jazz Festival Signature Event. Gallery programs sponsored by the University of Idaho Office of the Provost, the College of Art & Architecture, students of the University of Idaho, and the business of the individual Friends of the Prichard Art Gallery. Educational outreach programs sponsored by the Idaho Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts and the Moscow Food Co-op Dime In Time program.
