Event Description:
Dr. John B. Herrington, explorer, adventurer, and the world’s first Indigenous astronaut is looking forward to inspiring kids and families.
Herrington is a member of the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma, and flew to the International Space Station in 2002 aboard the shuttle Endeavour. The historic mission included three space walks, the delivery of the Expedition-Six crew, the delivery, installation and activation of the P1 Truss, and the transfer of cargo from Shuttle to the Station. He also rode a bicycle from Cape Flattery, Washington, to Cape Canaveral, Florida, in 2008 to call attention to the importance of education in STEM-related fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
Dr Herrington works with a variety of organizations including the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES).
His visit to Artisans at the Dahmen Barn will include a reading and book signing of his children’s book Mission to Space.
Students often wonder how they might impact their communities and also the world .Dr. Herrington’s lectures highlight the need for personal motivation, mentors, and educational and experiential opportunities. "What is your measure of success?”
he asks. It’s never too early in a student’s life to dream big and plan for the future.
