Name: Sharing Corner Celebration
Date: October 16, 2018
Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM PDT
Event Description:
The RDI Greater Palouse Rural Leadership Development Cohort invites the community to come for a celebration unveiling a new community resource, Sharing Corners, with food and cider at the Uniontown Community Building on Tuesday, October 16 from 6:00pm-8:00pm. The event is a free and family-friendly.
Each RDI Leadership Cohort embarks on a community project and, with a significant need for food and family entertainment in rural communities throughout the region, the cohort developed a plan to create Sharing Corners. Sharing Corners are spaces to house staple food items, puzzles and games, toiletries, warm hats and gloves, whatever a community may have an abundance of or need for. Inspired by Little Free Pantries and Little Free Libraries, Sharing Corners provide a space to leave something when you have extra or no need for it and to grab something when you need it. For communities without a grocery store, library, movie theater or other amenities, Sharing Corners are a unique space to share staples, find fun bonding activities for families, and build connections.
The cohort designed Sharing Corners to be flexible enough to fit various community needs and be placed in various locations. The first Sharing Corner will be at the Colton Post Office located at 509 Steptoe St. in Colton, WA. This Sharing Corner will be accessible 24-hours a day in a safe location and at a place where many community members have already been sharing excess produce and other goods. An additional Sharing Corner will be installed in Uniontown at a soon to be announced location. Details and a toolkit for other communities to develop Sharing Corners will be available after the event as the cohort hopes to see Sharing Corners pop up across the Greater Palouse. This project, including the initial stocking of the Sharing Corner, was generously funded by the Avista Foundation, Innovia, and the Empire Health Foundation. Once open, donations for continued stocking can be brought to the Colton Post Office and directly stocked into the Sharing Corner. An extra thank you to the Colfax Library for hosting the Rural Community Leadership Program on numerous occasions!
The Sharing Corner Celebration will involve a light meal and cider while we reveal the Sharing Corner, stock it, and answer questions.
