Name: Stuff the Bus
Date: August 14, 2014 - August 16, 2014
Event Description:
Stuff the Bus is getting started a little bit early this year.   The 6th annual drive for K-12 school supplies is a collaboration of Pullman Kiwanis, Moscow Kiwanis, Pullman Child Welfare, and participating school districts in Pullman, Moscow, Colfax, and Colton-Uniontown.
Stuff the Bus officially began on Saturday when 20 volunteers met at Gladish Gym to assemble 386 sets of school supplies in backpacks for participating schools.
“This is only phase one,” said drive organizer Sandra Woodrow, a Pullman Kiwanis member.  “We’re just getting started!” Woodrow continues enthusiastically.
“The first 386 backpacks will be distributed as a part of the drive coming up Thursday to Saturday August 14 to 16 in Pullman, Moscow, Colfax and Colton-Uniontown.  With financial contributions and donated supplies during Stuff the Bus, we’re hoping to have enough to build an additional 400 backpacks and provide miscellaneous school supplies.”
The financial equivalent to the school supplies Stuff the Bus hopes to collect and distribute to children in need on the Palouse before school starts is $30,000.
“We measure the need for Stuff the Bus in our communities based on the number of children in the school districts that are on the free or reduced school lunch program.  These low income families struggle financially to provide basic everyday living needs and have difficulty acquiring the necessary school supplies for their children to start the school year successfully.”  Woodrow said.
Across the Palouse, approximately 25-30% of students are on the free or reduced school lunch program.   In 2013, Stuff the Bus contributed supplies to help more than 500 students across the Palouse.  For more information about Stuff the Bus and to get involved, visit: http://pullmankiwanis.org/Stuff-the-Bus.htm
