Long before Santa starts loading his sleigh, the Sugarplum Fairy is making her rounds in the treasured holiday ballet, “The Nutcracker.” Both the Sugarplum Fairy and the Nutcracker will appear on stage at the Beasley Coliseum on Sunday, December 11th at 3pm in a Eugene Ballet production through the sponsorship of Festival Dance & Performing Arts.
Audiences of all ages flock to “The Nutcracker” each holiday season to see this enchanting ballet that includes beautiful scenery, lavish costumes, stunning dancing and Tchaikovsky’s soaring music. Performed by a large cast of over 40 dancers, the story begins with a gala Christmas Party at the home of the heroine, Clara. After the guests leave and the clock strikes midnight, the magic begins with large and small mice battling a Nutcracker doll who comes to life. With the help of Clara, the Nutcracker wins and the audience is whisked away through the Snow Kingdom and on to the Kingdom of the Sweets, presided over by the Sugarplum Fairy and her Cavalier. In this Kingdom, dancers from many lands entertain, performing Spanish, Russian and Arabian dances, followed by Mother Ginger and her little Bon Bons. The performance concludes with the beautiful Waltz of the Flowers and a Grand Pas de Deux danced by the Sugarplum Fairy and her Cavalier. This holiday classic is perfect for the entire family!
The Eugene Ballet, one of our region’s leading dance companies, tours “The Nutcracker” from November through the end of December to theaters in Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Montana and Wyoming. In addition to the 22 professional dancers, the company adds local dance students in each place to dance the roles of baby mice, little angels, bon bons, party children and waltzing flowers. In the December 11th production, 29 local dancers, who are students of the Festival Dance Academy, auditioned for roles and have been rehearsing since September.
“Having our dance students take part on stage with professional dancers is a very special opportunity for them and makes the ballet even more of a community event,” says Festival Dance Executive Director, Abby Glanville. “We are thrilled to be able to bring this timeless holiday classic to our region every other year.”
