Name: "The Road Through Damascus" | A staged reading presented by UI Theatre Arts
Date: September 17, 2016
Time: 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM PDT
Event Description:
A Quirky Love Letter to the Odd Charms of a Small Town and Its Unique Inhabitants

Playwright Robert Macke has written a love letter to unconventional characters and the quirky small town they inhabit in his play, “The Road through Damascus” being produced as a staged reading at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 16-17 and at 2 p.m. Sept. 18 at The Forge Theater, 404 Sweet Avenue, Moscow. The reading is free for University of Idaho students and $10 for the public. Tickets are available 30 minutes before curtain.

Macke, who lives in Cleves, Ohio, is a UI distance education student and MFA candidate in playwriting. He penned his script as a surreal take on the classic play, “Our Town,” by Thornton Wilder, with a twist of “Welcome to Night Vale” oddness and mystery winding its way through the streets.

The script has evolved greatly since its first production in 2014 at Northern Kentucky University as Macke’s senior project.

Just like Macke, himself. Originally attracted to the theater through acting, he appeared in high school plays and pursued performance in college until a dismal audition made him question his decision. A professor suggested he try playwriting. Macke found his creative voice and hasn’t looked back.

And the ink is flowing: in the UI MFA playwriting class with Robert Caisley, through his involvement in Know Theatre of Cincinnati, Ohio, where he contributes to “Serials” that has a loyal following, and Clifton Performance Theater, also in Cincinnati, which coincidently opens a three-week full production of “The Road through Damascus” on Sept. 16.

The UI reading of “The Road Though Damascus” will be directed by Christina Holaday and includes César Reyes, Alexa Lamers, Kymber Dodd, Sean Hendrickson, Bryce Gowey, Mitchel Rowyer and Evelyn Gorski.
