Community members are invited to the Moscow Public Library on Tuesday, March 13 for "The Vietnam War: A POW Experience" presented by Bob Chenoweth.
Bob Chenoweth was born in Portland and grew up in Eugene and Portland, graduating from high school in 1966. He enlisted in the army and was trained as an aircraft mechanic and helicopter crew chief. He arrived in Vietnam in January 1967 and served a one year assignment, flying over 1000 hours in the Mekong Delta region before extending his tour. After a leave, he returned to Vietnam in January 1968, moving to Qui Nhon.
He was 20 years old and starting his second tour of duty in Vietnam when he was shot down over South Vietnam on Feb. 8, 1968 by regional National Liberation Front (Viet Cong) forces.
He was captured along with his crew and two passengers; he then spent just over five years in captivity, three of them in the countryside before moving into the camp system in Hanoi in late 1971.
After returning home in March 1973, he earned a B.A. in anthropology from American University in Washington D.C. and later worked at the National Museum of Natural History,
the National Air and Space Museum, and for the Army Museum System in Hawaii before taking a job as curator of the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. His career path led him to Montana's Grant‐Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site in 1992 and then to the Nez Perce National Historical Park in 1995. In 2017, he retired from the National Park Service.
