Date: October 20, 2014
Time: 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM PDT
Event Description:
The University of Idaho Library is sponsoring a free screening of RIP! A Remix Manifesto, the 2009 open-source documentary on creativity, copyright, and collaboration in the digital age. Web activist Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers. The film follows Girl Talk, a mash-up musician who crafts live remixes of popular music and has received commercial and critical success from his work. Girl Talk repurposes and repositions other artists? work to create new pieces, but is his music a legal appropriation or an illegal violation of copyright? This film also features Creative Commons founder Lawrence Lessig and cameos from various artists and politicians on both sides of the issue. With RIP! A Remix Manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk serve as tour guides on a probing investigation into how culture builds upon culture in the digital age. The University of Idaho Library is screening this film as a part of Open Access Week 2014. For more information on Open Access, visit www.lib.uidaho.edu.?
