With rising temperatures in the forecast, customers can keep an eye on their energy usage with these energy-efficiency tips:

  • Set your air-conditioning thermostat at the highest comfortable setting (78° F or higher, if possible). Each degree over 70° F can save approximately 3 percent on your cooling bill.
  • Most of our area is blessed with cool nighttime temperatures even in the hottest days of summer. Open the windows and bring in cool fresh air in the early morning to control your home temperature.
  • Ceiling and other fans can provide additional cooling and better circulation so you can increase the thermostat setting.
  • Most fans have a switch to change the fan direction. Make sure ceiling fans are blowing downward (in a counterclockwise direction) to send air past your body.
  • Use a programmable thermostat to adjust temperature settings several times per day on a preset schedule.
  • Close shades, blinds or draperies on unshaded glass areas to reduce heat gain by as much as 50 percent.
  • Use heat-producing appliances such as dishwashers, ovens, ranges and dryers after 7:00 p.m., if possible.
  • Instead of your stove or oven, use small electric appliances, a microwave, or an outdoor grill for cooking.
