City of Moscow Celebrates Fair Housing Month and Local Nonprofit Organizations

April 26, 2017 (Moscow, Idaho) — Moscow Mayor Bill Lambert recently declared the month of April as Fair Housing Month in recognition of the 49th anniversary of the adoption of the Fair Housing Act.  The 1968 Fair Housing Act expanded the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin, sex, (and as later amended) handicap and family status.
 
The City of Moscow’s commitment to fair housing is supported by the Fair and Affordable Housing Commission’s efforts to promote fair housing practices within Moscow. The Commission conducts annual education and outreach training with local realtors, property managers, attorneys and others to educate them about Fair Housing Act requirements and obligations to ensure that all persons have access to housing opportunities.
 
The Commission also acknowledges the following local non-profit organizations’ efforts to provide safe and affordable housing in Moscow and the region:
 
  • Palouse Habitat for Humanity partners with community members to help build affordable housing for those in need.   • Sojourners’ Alliance is a local nonprofit working toward a vision of dignity and respect for all people. Its mission is to confront the barriers that lead to hunger, homelessness and poverty through direct intervention with those in need.   • Family Promise of the Palouse provides a dynamic environment where families struggling with homelessness have the opportunity to change their story. The organization works with families through case management, education and support to help them improve their living situation.   • Community Action Partnership serves the ten northernmost counties in Idaho and Asotin County in Washington, working with communities to provide programs that increase stability and projects that offer a springboard for families to exit poverty. The Mission of the Fair and Affordable Housing Commission is to research, analyze and recommend to the Mayor and Council ways in which the City may further fair housing practices and affordable housing practices.
