Palouse Pathways is hosting two great free college and career events the weekend of April 21-22!

SELECTIVE* COLLEGE WORKSHOP APRIL 22 from 3-5 pm Federal Building Conference Room in Moscow

This workshop is for students (in roughly 8**-11 grade) who might be good candidates for selective colleges.  This includes students who want to attend selective schools, and ALSO bright low income students who should consider selective schools because they provide very very generous need-based aid and could actually be cheaper for students to attend than their state institution.

This workshop features presentations via teleconference by admissions representatives from selective colleges.  This year we are fortunate to have admissions staff from MIT, Yale, Swarthmore participating (representatives from Harvard may also present!).  They will answer student questions.  We will also have a representative from the Consortium of small liberal arts schools called Colleges that Change Lives www.ctcl.org.  The ctcl schools have a lot of the attributes of selective colleges but they are MUCH easier to get in, and we want students to have the opportunity to broaden their college lists to avoid frustration in the admissions process.

The event will also feature discussion groups with local alums from Harvard, Stanford, Amherst and others (possibly Brown, Williams and Smith).  These conversations will give students some information about what it is like to attend the schools, and also an opportunity to discuss their own aspirations and interests (something they will need to learn how to do to participate in college admissions interviews down the road).

All are welcome to attend this event.  Parents are welcome; counselors too!  Email Palouse Pathway for more information.

SPARK PRESENTATION APRIL 21 3:30-5:00 Neill Public Library

This is a first event in a series that will feature interesting, captivating ideas for high schoolers designed to spark interest, encourage conversation, expose students to majors and areas of study…..  The topic of the first one will be “the pursuit of happiness” and it will feature Jamie Derrick, UI Psychology Professor; Paul Kwon, WSU Psychology Professor; and Trish Glazebrook, WSU Philosophy professor.  All have written on subjects relating to happiness and will share their work and ideas with interested students (in all grades, including high school seniors)

This event would be great for students interested in ideas and lively discussion, considering psychology or philosophy as majors, or those who want to be happy 😊.

*Technically a selective college is any school that admits fewer than all its applicants.  The focus is on schools that would be considered highly selective, ranging from those which admit fewer than 10% of their applicants (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Pomona….) to those that accept 25-50% (Vassar, Wellesley, Whitman and some great state schools).
