The Latah County Historical Society is proud to partner with the historic Wallowa Lake Lodge to offer an exciting mid-winter excursion. Join this four day, three night trip to Wallowa Lake, Oregon for the January 24-27, 2019 Eagle Cap Extreme Sled Dog Races.

The excursion includes round-trip transportation by motor coach from Moscow, ID to the Joseph, OR area, three nights lodging at the Historic Wallowa Lake Lodge, transportation to local attractions, and meals including one lunch, three breakfasts and three dinners. Participants will be able to watch as the dogs are hitched to sleds and then speed off through the starting chute. A visit to Race Central to check team progress and learn about the sport is also planned.

While the Mushers and dogs are on the trail, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, participants can enjoy relaxing in the Lodge lobby, visiting historic sites like the grave of Old Chief Joseph, touring bronze galleries, painting and photo galleries, and shops in Joseph, or tasting at a local craft distillery.

The Eagle Cap Extreme Sled Dog Races are a qualifier for teams intending to participate in the Iditarod or Yukon Quest races later in the year.  This is ECX’s twelfth year and the races typically attract 20 to 25 teams.  Past participants have been from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Michigan, and Alberta.  Individual races include a 17 mile youth race, a two part 62 mile “pot” race, a 100 mile race, and the 200 mile qualifying race.  All participants are typically finished by Saturday afternoon.  The 100 and 200 mile races are considered the toughest races outside of Alaska because the trail has many elevation changes. More information about the races can be found at https://www.eaglecapextreme.com/.

Those interested in reserving a spot on this exciting excursion should contact the Latah County Historical Society at 208.882.1004 or lchslibrary@latah.id.us to sign up and pay their registration fee of $395. Lodging is being handled by Wallowa Lake Lodge and ranges from $25-$100/night, dependent upon room size and occupancy. For the best selection of rooms, participants should contact the lodge early at 541.432.9821. Reservations for both the trip and lodging must be made by December 15, 2018.

Proceeds from this trip benefit the Latah County Historical Society. LCHS exists to preserve the heritage of Latah County, and put it to use for the benefit of our citizens and communities.  We accomplish these ends with exhibits, educational programs, research facilities, public events, community collaborations, and publications.
