Polar Walk 2017 – February 1, 2107

January 31, 2017 (Moscow, Idaho) — Approximately 1,500 students from eight Moscow Schools will participate along with over 250 parents, teachers and community leaders and over 40 University of Idaho students and athletes in the popular Safe Routes to School “Polar Walk”, February 1, 2017.
Encouraging children to walk to school in all types of weather promotes a healthy active lifestyle and decreases automobile congestion dangers along school routes. Americans have the lowest percentage of individuals who walk or bike to work and school even when conditions are ideal. The Polar Walk encourages active travel to and from school in all types of weather. Walking to school builds connections between families, schools and the broader community. We invite the community to join us in this effort by bundling up and walking with us to school or your workplace. “Schools and communities are healthier when children have safe access to active commuting as a lifestyle.” – Dr. Philip Scruggs
Parents and children are encouraged to dress appropriately for the conditions by wearing boots, gloves, hats, heavy winter coats, snow pants, and scarves and abide by walking and biking safety regulations. Students are invited to walk with parents or in groups. Some schools will host Walking School Buses coordinated and led by parent volunteers. Park-and-Walk locations are assigned near each school for children who want to walk but may live too far away. We ask all Moscow residents to drive with caution in all school zones to help accommodate the high volume of children walking to school on this day. The Moscow Police Department will offer additional safety patrols at school sites.
