The Regional Theatre of the Palouse proudly presents The King and I, opening
August 16th. The production takes audiences on a journey of cultural acceptance, understanding,
and unity that remains vital across generations. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s romanticized
musical is based on the real-life events of Anna Leonowens, a British Governess hired on as an
English teacher by the King of Siam in the early 1860’s. This story showcases the struggles of
accepting cultural differences while reminding us that love and respect is the basis of human
connection.
Audiences can expect the Regional Theatre of the Palouse’ standard of excellence in every detail
of this production. In order to authentically showcase the intricate beauty of historical Taiwanese
culture, the show features traditional masks, headdresses, and fabrics shipped directly from
Thailand.
“ The most exciting part of this production is keeping a classic show timeless, all while relating it
to what is current so that modern audiences not only gain an appreciation for another time and
another place but that they enjoy every minute of it,” commented Director Michael Todd. “In a
fast paced world, I find presenting the nuanced subtlety of relationship building as important and
captivating.”
Audience members of all ages will be enamored by The King and I ’s beloved musical scores,
exotic flare, and poignant message.
