Every quarter the Moscow Chamber of Commerce awards the STAR Award to a group that brings tourism to the Palouse.  This quarter’s Supporting Tourism and Recreation (STAR) Award goes to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.  Aaron Mayhugh is the Jazz Festival Manager and will be accepting the award for hosting the 50th Anniversary of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho.

The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival was held in Moscow and it took place Thursday, February 23rd through Saturday, February 25th and was held in the Kibbie Dome on the University of Idaho Campus.  The festival benefited Moscow immensely by bringing in 4,000 students from over 130 schools as well as the local hotels that offered group rates for the attendees.

The first University of Idaho Jazz Festival took place in 1967, with a dozen student groups and one guest artist.  From there it has grown to host world famous Jazz artists!  After an 11 -year hiatus, the competition returned for the 50th Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival and had 386 total entrants, consisting of soloists, combos and ensembles and it provides various workshops to not just students but also the community.  Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival dates for 2018 are set for Thursday, February 22nd through Saturday, February 24th.
