BOISE—BookPeople in Moscow is hosting an event 7 p.m., May 11 to introduce parents and students to the high school writing camp, Writers at Harriman. The camp, now in its ninth year, is a program of the nonprofit Friends of Idaho State Parks. It takes place in Harriman State Park in southeastern Idaho, near West Yellowstone.

Camp Director Rick Just will be on hand to answer questions about Writers at Harriman. Student writers Kailee Boyer from Culdesac and Elizabeth Fitzwater from Pierce, and Annabelle Ady from Lewiston will read from their work. All three were published in the Henrys Fork Journal, produced for the 2016 camp.

“For most students, Writers at Harriman is their first chance to build their skills, meet fellow writers, and learn from professionals,” Just said. “We want every high school student with a passion for writing to be able to attend.”

Students spend six nights and five days at the camp, receiving instruction and individual help from four teaching writers and three guest artists. Tuition for the camp, which includes lodging and meals, is $175. Some scholarships are available.

“You may have seen the Idaho Public Television program about Writers at Harriman. It really captured the magic of the place,” Just said. He added, “We’re especially interested in getting applications from students for smaller schools.”

Just will be available to sign his own books following the presentation and readings. His latest is a photo history of Idaho’s state parks.
